Colour Therapy

Colour Therapy is a non-invasive holistic therapy which uses colour to treat all levels, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Colour has a profound effect on us and your colour likes and dislikes can indicate where there may be an imbalance of colour. This also gives indications of personality issues which may need to be addressed. After the initial consultation the Colour Therapist can assess the appropriate course of the treatment and discuss the different methods available and give advice on how colour can be used in every day life.

Colour is light of different wavelengths and frequencies and we are all surrounded by electromagnetic waves of energy of which colour is just a small part. The visible spectrum consists of the rainbow but because our retinas have three types of colour receptors we can only detect three of these colours, red, blue and green. These colours are called additive primaries and it is these three colours that are mixed to create all the other colours we see. The wavelength and frequency of light influences the colour we see and the seven colours of the spectrum all have varying wavelengths and frequencies. Red is at the lower end of the spectrum and has a higher wavelength but lower frequency to that of Violet at the top end of the spectrum which has a lower wavelength and higher frequency.

As light passes through a prism it is split into the seven visible colours of the spectrum by refraction. Refraction is caused by the change in speed experienced by a wave of light when it changes medium.

Each of the colours of the light spectrum has its own particular energy, which resonates with the energy of each of the seven main chakras of the body. By applying the appropriate colour to the body and, therefore, redressing the balance of energy we can help to stimulate the body's own healing process.

The chakras in the body are arranged in the order of the spectrum starting with red relating to the base or root chakra through to violet relating to the crown chakra. The skin and skull absorb colour as well as the eyes and the energy of colour can affect us on all levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Every cell in the body needs light energy, so colour therapy can have a widespread effect on the whole body.

Therefore using the seven colours of the spectrum Colour Therapy helps to balance and enhance our body's energy centres, the Chakras and also helps stimulate our body's own healing process. If our energy centres become blocked then our body cannot function properly. In Colour Therapy the appropriate colour is usually used with its complementary colour, e.g. violet with yellow.

There are various methods of applying colour during a treatment such as colour breathing, colour visualisation, application of coloured silks to the body or exposure of the body to coloured lights by use of a light box and filters. At home the therapy can be carried on by wearing clothing or eating foods of a particular colour or colours as recommended by the Colour Therapist.
